Smart plugs are usually the first thing recommended to anyone curious about smart home tech, and for good reason. They're inexpensive, easy to install, and require no home rewiring. But whether they'll meaningfully change your daily life depends on what you'd actually plug into them.
What a smart plug actually does
At its core, a smart plug is an outlet cover that adds Wi-Fi (or Zigbee or Matter) control on top of the plug it covers. Once installed, whatever is plugged into it can be:
- Turned on and off from your phone from anywhere with an internet connection.
- Scheduled to turn on and off at specific times or on specific days.
- Automated based on triggers (sunset, arriving home, another device turning on).
- Voice controlled through Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri.
Some smart plugs also monitor energy consumption, which is useful for identifying which devices are quietly running up your electric bill.
Devices where a smart plug is genuinely useful
Standard lamps. Any lamp with a standard switch becomes a smart lamp with a smart plug — no smart bulb required. Schedule your living room lamps to turn on at sunset and off at bedtime, and the daily quality-of-life difference is meaningful.
Space heaters and fans. Being able to turn on a bedroom heater from your phone before you leave the couch, or shut off a fan you forgot about from another room, is genuinely useful.
Christmas lights and seasonal decorations. The archetypal smart plug use case. Schedule once, forget for the season.
Coffee makers with a physical on switch. Wake up to freshly brewed coffee that started making itself ten minutes before your alarm.
Aquarium and terrarium equipment. Reliable scheduling of lights, heaters, and pumps is a small revolution for pet keepers.
Devices where a smart plug does nothing useful
Anything that turns off when it loses power. Modern TVs, computers, printers, and most appliances need to be turned on through their own controls after power resumes. Cutting power to them via a smart plug just means you have to manually turn them on afterward — that's not automation, that's an extra step.
Devices with their own smart apps. If your device already connects to Wi-Fi, a smart plug is redundant.
Anything with a high power draw beyond the plug's rating. Portable air conditioners, industrial space heaters, and some kitchen appliances exceed the amperage many smart plugs support. Read the specs before plugging in.
The buying guide
Look for smart plugs that support Matter, the emerging cross-platform smart home standard. This future-proofs you against being locked into one manufacturer's ecosystem. Also verify voice assistant compatibility with whatever you already use.
Avoid ultra-cheap unbranded smart plugs from unfamiliar sellers — some have well-documented security issues, and their apps often require excessive permissions. Established brands (TP-Link Kasa, Amazon, Wyze, and similar) are the safer choice at a small premium.
